Look! Up in the sky!

Did you know that this week is THE week to look at the night sky? Find a dark spot away from city lights and enjoy! Here are a few suggestions for viewing:

VIEWING MARS:
Clench your fist in front of your face and raise your arm three fists up. Look to the East/Northeast to see Mars. It will be at its brightest at 8:00 EST and visible as soon as it's dark. Mars will be the brightest "star" visible. (I assume these guidelines are specifically for the southeastern United States, where I am currently. I don't know how this would vary by different geographic locations.)
Here is a nice photo of Mars and suggestions on viewing this week:

THE GEMINIDS METEOR SHOWER:
It peaks on December 13th at 8:00 EST and continues all week. There will be as many as 50 meteors an hour. STREAKS OF YELLOW, GREEN AND BLUE!!! The Geminids come from asteroid debris rather than comet debris, so their trails are more brilliant.

TIPS ON VIEWING THE NIGHT SKY:
Prep your eyes: Focusing on the Little Dipper for about 15 minutes will help your eyes adjust to the darkness.
Go somewhere dark! It's best to be away from city lights.
A reclining lawn chair and warm blanket helps you lean back and relax while you enjoy the show.

National Novel Writing Month

How about writing your first novel in the next 30 days! It's time to visit www.nanowrimo.org and get cracking. I had a tough time accessing the site today. Rather than considering that a misfortune for me, I hope it's a great thing for the site, meaning... lots of visitors! I wanted to sign up for the 30 Days - 175 pages, 50,000 words. I'll include some helpful tips as the month goes by.
